Obtaining a VI Driver’s Licence

Drivers holding an overseas driver's license are only allowed to drive within the BVI for up to 1 month.  It is recommended that the foreign driver keep within their possession, their passport (used to enter the Territory) and overseas's driver's licence while driving within the Territory.

After the 1 month period, the foreign driver will be required to make a visit to the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a VI Driver's Licence. The Department of Motor Vehicles is located at R & R Malone Complex, Pockwood Pond, Tortola.  The contact number is 284 468 4080/81.

The following guide only applies if you have a overseas driver's licence and will be working in the BVI.

  • The foreign driver will be required to take a BVI road safety/knowledge written test. A study-guide may be purchased from the DMV at a cost of $5. It is recommended that the foreign driver study the guide a few times.
  • Written test is only administered on Monday to Friday; 9am - 2:30pm. The Foreign Driver License must be taken to the DMV before one can take the written test.
  • Upon successful completion of the written test, the foreign driver will be issued a Written Test Certificate.  The DMV personnel will also provide the foreign driver with available dates to conduct the road test.  At that time a date should be agreed to.
  • The road test will be administered on the agreed date between the hours of 9am and 11am.
  • On the date of the road test, the foreign driver must visit the DMV with a licensed and insured vehicle.   The emergency handbrakes for the vehicle must be located between the driver and the front passenger.
  • On the date of the road test, the foreign driver must take the following to DMV:
    • Foreign driver's license
    • Written test certificate
    • Social Security Card
    • Valid passport
    • 1 Passport-sized Photo
    • Work permit card, BVI Belonger's card or (Employment letter if employed by Government)
    • Proof of Blood Type
  • The cost of the Driver's Licence is one year at $15 or three years at $35.
