In April 1961, at a time when Tourism, the British Virgin Island's (BVI) leading industry, was essentially non-existent, RiteWay (RTW) had its humble beginnings providing groceries to the resident population in a small rented store in Road Town Tortola.
In 1963 Riteway (RTW) purchased its first cargo vessel, the M.V. Kilros, through which it was able to extend its services to our sister island of Virgin Gorda selling groceries directly from this "floating store".
After years of steady growth, the company built its first warehouse in 1970. To meet the needs of a growing population it was converted to a Cash and Carry grocery store which operated there for the next 36 years. In June 2008, RTW opened the doors of its new 24,000 square foot Cash and Carry store.
A merger that had taken place in 1975 and a subsequent land acquisition over the years resulted in a Warehouse Complex, and our flagship retail grocery store at Pasea Estate, Tortola.
Since 1977, RTW has operated its own retail grocery store chain, called Riteway Food Markets which boasts four retail stores along with Fine Foods in the east and Harbour Market in the west. This service is enhanced by our Cash and Carry and a Wholesale division in Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Together they provide an excellent distribution network to other retailers and businesses in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
Where we are today …
On September 15th, 2010, Riteway (RTW) once again rose to the meet the needs of a growing community and dynamic tourist industry with the opening of our new state of the art flagship store in Pasea. This 21,000 square foot grocery features an in-store bakery and deli, an extensive line of imported wines and cheeses, fresh cut meats, poultry and fish, a floral shop and a wide variety of groceries, spirits, tobaccos and household goods.
We carry exclusive distribution rights for brands such as Kraft, General Foods, M&M Mars, Kellogg’s, Nabisco, Coca Cola, Heineken, Grey Goose, Finlandia, Jack Daniels, Mount Gay Rum and Gallo Wines, all of which help to make up the company’s impressive portfolio of brands.
Today, with a compliment of over four hundred (400) employees, Riteway (RTW) has maintained its leadership position as the territory’s largest and most successful wholesaler and retailer of food, beverages and related goods. Furthermore, it is generally considered to be one of the most progressive companies in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) – a position the current Management Team continues to strengthen by employing new and innovative strategies.
