BVI Red Cross

British  Virgin Islands Red Cross

Our belief in the power of kindness can be traced back to the creation of the Red Cross Movement.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement started in 1863 and was inspired by Swiss businessman Henry Dunant.

The suffering of thousands of men on both sides of the Battle of Solferino in 1859 upset Dunant. Many were left to die due to lack of care.

He proposed creating national relief societies, made up of volunteers, trained in peacetime to provide neutral and impartial help to relieve suffering in times of war.  These became the National Societies of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The British Virgin Islands Red Cross, established in 1956, is a Branch of the British Red Cross National Society.  The Mission of the Branch is “to mobilize the power of humanity so that individuals and communities have the capacity to prepare for, deal with and recover from crisis”.   Our work is guided by the seven Fundamental Principles of Humunity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Vounteer service, Unity and Universality.  We are an auxiliary to the Government in the humanitarian services.

Our community outreach programme range from activities such as disaster preparedness and risk reduction, providing first responders at community events such as sporting activities, registering blood donors, trainings in First Aid, Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Basic nursing care.

Following disasters we assist with needs assessments, distribution of relief items (food and non-food items), emergency transportation, cash programming and many other activities.
